Sammy squirrel always had the same argument every day with his friend, Willow the bear. He didn’t know how it started, but out of the blue, someone would say something and the argument would start.
They would argue about who was being a better class monitor. Sammy would not shout and would let the class play games and talk a little. Willow would shout and was a very strict monitor.
Half of the class would have to cower under Willow while the other half would have fun and could play games with Sammy. In the class, there was competition for sitting in Sammy’s half.
Sammy really didn’t like these arguments. He wanted to avoid them, but just couldn’t figure out what was causing it. Every day, he would get frustrated about the same argument.
One day, Sammy decided to not talk to Willow. He completely avoided him. If Willow came next to him and started talking about something, Sammy would immediately go away on some excuse. Willow got really sad.
Willow missed his friend. He decided to make up with Sammy. He went to Sammy and said, “Why are you not talking to me?”.
Sammy said, “Why are you so strict with the class?”.
Willow said, “Last time I was the monitor, I was doing exactly what you were doing. The class didn’t listen to me, and I got shouted at by the teacher”.
Sammy said, “I never knew. Well, we’re still friends”. Willow said, “Ohh yeah!”.
Sammy then asked Willow, “Why do you compare both of our ways of monitoring the class?”.
Willow replied, “It’s just that I like your way of monitoring, but after getting scolded, I’m afraid that it will happen again”.
Sammy said, “At the time when you got scolded, you were the only monitor. Now you have one more monitor to rely on”.
That made Willow feel better. He agreed with Sammy and then they both started to collaborate. Willow would handle the quiet guys while Sammy would handle the people who used to disturb everyone.
The class was really happy. There was no competition and now, they had some nice monitors too!!.
Things to learn: Ask WHY something happened and go deep into the cause. Don’t just stare at the effect. Sometimes there is a cause behind the cause. Keep asking why until you reach the real one.
